The Sunday School

The Sunday School's aim is to pass on the teachings of the Orthodox Christian faith to the younger members of the community and its surrounding areas. It has been around for some time now and operates in two sections: a Greek-speaking part for those who feel confident with the Greek language, and an English-speaking part aimed at children who are not from Greek-speaking families or those who are not familiar with the language.

The majority of those who attend are school children, although in recent years, it is becoming increasingly common for adults (usually mothers) to attend too. The School operates on most Sundays of the year, during the Priest's sermon, immediately after Holy Communion.

The children are taught in a variety of ways, usually by printed/paper icon and leaflet hand-outs. On selected Sundays, the children are offered a variety of refreshments (cakes, biscuits and soft drinks).

Every year, just before Christmas, a group of children from the Sunday School visit the homes and business premises of a number of Orthodox Christian families across the capital, to sing the traditional Christmas Carols. This always proves to be a popular fund-raising event for the community.

Since 1993, £4,880 (UK Sterling) has been raised for the community and people such as His Eminence, Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain have been visited by the group. The graph below shows how much was raised each year.
